The task of writing an account of the Cathedral of Notre Dame is materially lightened by the minute details of its history and architecture to be found in the various writings of M. Viollet-le-Duc. Strange it is that, where so much has been changed, the Cathedral church of Notre Dame has remained almost unaltered in outline and general effect. The origin of Notre Dame is enveloped in mistery.
