CLARA 07 : CRITIQUE ARCHITECTURALE ET DÉBAT PUBLIC - ARCHITECTURAL CRITICISM AND PUBLIC DEBATE (ENG-FR) COLLECTIF

Dans cette septième livraison de la revue CLARA Architecture/Recherche, le « dossier thématique » Critique architecturale et débat public interroge les frontières disciplinaires de la critique architecturale, et les modalités de son engagement avec le débat public. Communément envisagée en relation exclusive avec le monde professionnel et le milieu académique de l’architecture, la critique architecturale soulève pourtant des thèmes et des questions qui dépassent les intérêts professionnels ou spécialisés. Elle peut donc être considérée comme une « interface » entre différents acteurs, assumant un rôle de médiation. L’essai introductif, signé Hélène Jannière (Université Rennes 2) et Paolo Scrivano (Politecnico di Milano), formule l’hypothèse d’une critique « publique » illustrée par sept articles originaux qui, à partir d’exemples tirés de l’histoire récente, explorent les rapports entre critique architecturale, opinion publique et sphère publique. Le dossier « archives » jette un regard neuf sur les parcours individuels, relations et objectifs partagés de deux parmi les principaux architectes belges du XXe siècle : Robert Puttemans (1902–1978) et son fils Pierre Puttemans (1933–2013). Une sélection de documents inédits à ce jour établit un parallèle entre leurs carrières respectives au regard de quatre thématiques : sphère privée, formation, pratiques d’architectes et engagements. En fermeture du volume, un « aparté » revient sur l’exposition Recto/Verso (éditions 2017 et 2018) à l’initiative d’un collectif d’(anciens) étudiants de la Faculté d’architecture La Cambre Horta. / In this 7th issue of CLARA Architecture/Recherche journal, the “thematic section” dedicated to Architectural criticism and public debate questions the disciplinary boundaries of architectural criticism and how it engages with public debate. Despite its allegedly exclusive relation with the professional world of architecture and with academia, architectural criticism does broach themes and issues that go beyond professional and specialized interests. It can therefore criticism can therefore assume the role of an “interface” between different stakeholders, with the critic assuming the role of mediator. In their introductory essay, Hélène Jannière (Université Rennes 2) and Paolo Scrivano (Politecnico di Milano) argue that the question of what is “public” in criticism deserves further consideration. The following seven original contributions, using examples drawn from recent history, explore different relations of architectural criticism to public opinion and to the public sphere. The “archives” section sheds a new light on the individual trajectories, relationships and shared objectives of two among the major Belgian architects of the twentieth century: Robert Puttemans (1902–1978) and his son Pierre Puttemans (1933–2013). A selection of fresh documents draws a parallel between their respective careers against four main themes: private sphere, education, professional practice and engagement. To conclude, a “Miscellaneous paper” revisits the Recto/Verso exhibition (editions 2017 and 2018) initiated by a collective of (former) students of the School of architecture La Cambre Horta.
